What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy is a healthcare profession specialising in assessment  and intervention for speech, language, and communication difficulties. Speech and language therapists work with individuals who experience difficulties in a wide range of areas, including attention and listening, play skills, social communication, emotional literacy, expressive language, and understanding of language. Speech and language therapists collaborate closely with individuals and their support networks to implement robust communication strategies, supports, and systems to help each client achieve their communication potential.

Does my child need speech and language therapy?

Every child is unique and on their own developmental timeline so there is no set rule for the best time to make a referral for therapy. It can be difficult to know if, and when, your child would benefit from receiving input from a Speech and Language Therapist. There are a few things it may be useful to think about when considering a speech and language therapy referral. Is your child struggling to make themselves understood and communicate their needs and wants? Are they getting frustrated when they are struggling to communicate? Do they find it difficult to engage with other people? Do they find it challenging to pay attention for longer periods? Can it be difficult to understand what they are saying at times? Do they find it difficult to remember information or follow instructions? If you have concerns about any of these areas, or any others,  it may be useful to speak with a speech and language therapist to gain some more information and advice.
